Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Evaluation

A multidisciplinary assessment for a complete picture of development and functioning across all ages.

Our ASD evaluations are conducted by a multidisciplinary team — a neuropsychologist and a speech-language pathologist working in close collaboration — to provide a thorough and accurate picture of the individual's development and functioning. By bringing together cognitive, behavioural, and language perspectives within a single evaluation, we offer a depth and clinical precision that neither discipline could achieve alone. We evaluate children, adolescents, and adults.

01

Case History

Prior to your first session, you will receive a detailed questionnaire covering developmental, medical, and social history, as well as any previous diagnoses or assessments. A dedicated meeting with the speech-language pathologist is also scheduled to explore the social and developmental history in greater depth — this session typically takes place remotely.

02

Evaluation

The evaluation is conducted jointly by a neuropsychologist and a speech-language pathologist, both present throughout the session, and typically lasts one to one and a half hours. All evaluations are conducted in person at our clinic. Parental presence is required for younger children.

Evaluations may be conducted in one of two ways:

Standalone

Conducted when there are concerns only regarding ASD and an assessment is needed to confirm or rule out the diagnosis.

Comprehensive

Added alongside a complete neuropsychological evaluation already underway, deepening the clinical picture without repeating what has already been assessed.

03

Presentation of Results and Recommendations

In a dedicated follow-up meeting, your clinicians will walk you through the evaluation results and any clinical conclusions reached. You will also receive personalized recommendations and a clear plan for next steps.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the full process take?

The full process typically spans about a month, though this depends on availability. The evaluation itself takes place in a single session, but preparing the written report — a thorough document reviewed at your results appointment — takes approximately two to three weeks.

What assessment tools are used?

The cornerstone of our evaluation is the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition), the gold standard for ASD assessment in North America. Administered jointly by our neuropsychologist and speech-language pathologist, the ADOS-2 is a structured observation protocol involving a series of activities and social interactions designed to elicit and assess behaviours relevant to an ASD diagnosis.

Do we receive a written report?

Yes. A comprehensive written report is prepared following the evaluation and reviewed in detail at your results appointment.

Is the evaluation covered by insurance?

Because our ASD evaluation involves both a neuropsychologist and a speech-language pathologist, fees may be claimable under either or both disciplines depending on your insurance plan. We recommend checking with your insurer regarding applicable coverage and limits.

My child is young — what should we expect?

Parental presence is required for young children. The ADOS-2 is organized into modules, each tailored to different language and communication levels. The appropriate module is selected ahead of the session based on information gathered through the questionnaire and SLP meeting, but can be adjusted on the day if needed. As a result, every evaluation looks different depending on the individual's profile.

Can adults be evaluated for ASD?

Yes — we evaluate children, adolescents, and adults. ASD frequently goes unrecognized into adulthood, and a formal evaluation can bring clarity and open access to appropriate supports regardless of age.

What happens after the evaluation if ASD is confirmed?

Your clinicians will provide personalized recommendations at your results appointment. These may include consulting other professionals (such as a psychologist or occupational therapist), accessing public services and support programs, and requesting accommodations at school or in the workplace.

How is this different from a neuropsychological evaluation?

An ASD evaluation is specifically designed to confirm or rule out ASD. A complete neuropsychological evaluation goes further — assessing cognitive functions such as memory, attention, executive functioning, and learning — to build a broader profile of the individual. The two can be combined through our comprehensive evaluation for a more complete clinical picture.

What languages are evaluations offered in?

Evaluations are available in French and English.
