Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral to book an appointment?
You can reach out to us directly to register — no doctor's note or specialist referral required.
What does a first session look like?
The first session is primarily a getting-to-know-you conversation. Your psychologist will seek to understand what brings you in, your background, and your goals. It is also an opportunity for you to assess whether you feel at ease with the therapist and the proposed approach — the quality of the therapeutic relationship is a key factor in effective treatment.
How long is each session?
Sessions are one hour, whether for individual or couples therapy.
How many sessions will I need?
The length of therapy varies depending on the nature of the difficulties, your goals, and your response to treatment. Some people benefit from a focused short-term approach (around 10 to 15 sessions); others opt for longer-term support. Your psychologist will regularly check in with you on progress and next steps.
Are psychology services covered by RAMQ or private insurance?
Psychology services in private practice are not covered by RAMQ. That said, many private insurance plans do include coverage for psychology — we recommend checking with your insurer directly to confirm your benefits before starting.
Will I receive a receipt for my sessions?
Yes. A receipt is provided after each session. It can be submitted to your private insurer or used as an eligible medical expense on your tax return.
What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychotherapist?
In Québec, the title of psychologist is reserved for professionals who are members of the Ordre des psychologues du Québec (OPQ) and hold a doctorate in psychology. A psychotherapy permit can be held by professionals from various regulated orders — social workers, guidance counsellors, and others — who have met the required psychotherapy training standards. Both can provide psychotherapy, but the training and regulatory framework differ.
Can a psychologist prescribe medication?
No. In Québec, psychologists are not authorized to prescribe medication. If medication is being considered, your psychologist can refer you to your family doctor or a psychiatrist.
What languages are services offered in?
Psychology services are currently offered in French only.
